Our trip to North Carolina Part 1

>> Tuesday, September 29, 2009

I am finally getting focused. We have all be suffering from a never ending cold and I haven't had the energy to post about our trip to North Carolina. I will try and do it in 3 or 4 parts.

Saturday, September 12th we decided to leave a day early for our trip to North Carolina! Chris had to work that day. After a quick meal of McDonalds, we hit the road a little after 5pm.

We quickly skipped through New York, New Jersey and on to Pennsylvania! A little past midnight, with kids sound asleep, Chris and I decided it was time for some food. We pulled into Denny's for some midnight pancakes!

An amazing thing happened when we finished our pancakes. A nice lady, who was dining with her husband, came over and told us how cute our kids are and how well behaved they were for it being so late at night. After the lady left, our waitress came over and asked what the lady had said to us. We told her and the waitress said,
"Well, they paid for your meal."

*Shock*

Apparently, the couple told the manager they wanted to pay for our meal because they were having such a fun time watching the kids enjoy their pancakes. We asked the manager to please send our thanks to the couple the next time they came in.

After our amazing meal in southern Pennsylvania, we flew through Maryland and West Virginia. At 3am, Chris decided he had enough. We found a Super 8 and pulled in for a few hours of needed sleep.

The kids had a few continental waffles (ie, reheated frozen waffles) and we were off again by 10am

We did not realize how long it takes to get through Virgina... it seemed to take forever! Finally we reached Tennessee.

Soon enough, after what seemed like forever, we reached North Carolina!!

We drove into the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina near Asheville. At 3:30pm, we reached our destination! Meeting Chris's bother, the OTHER Chris Boggie! His wife Denise, her folks who graciously lent us one of their beautiful cabins, and Denise's nieces, Danielle and Elizabeth.

At this point the trip, the car ride up and down through the mountains, and all the anxiety of meeting new people hit me hard. I had a horrible migraine and spent the first nice in the Cabin resting. So I will leave it at that for this post and pick up with the following days in the next post.

We survived the first day of Kindergarten. By "we" I mean Christopher and I, not Elizabeth. She was so excited that when the bus came, she didn't even say goodbye!! Just hopped on and me and her brother were just a passing moment in her life.

As we walked back to the house, Christopher started crying. He was totally pissed off that HE didn't get to go too! "don't like you"

After twenty minutes, he finally came in from the porch and was happy to have control over the TV. After the cab came, we went to the school and there was a fairly short parent meeting with the Principal, school State Trooper, Nurse, and the PTA which they call Home School Association (HSA) here.

The parents then split off according to grade where they had different speakers in different stations around the school. The kindergartners were in the library listening to a local Iroquois man who was showing them different tools and weapons from the area. One was very cool, a snapping turtle that had been made into a musical rattle! The shell had seeds in it and the head was mounted on the end as decoration.

Elizabeth was on the floor to the left of me. I could see her but she could not see me. She was desperately scanning the crowd for me and getting a little flushed and teary eyed thinking I wasn't there.

Then she spotted me. Happy girl in her new school shirt which was given to each kid in the school purchased by the HSA for all the kids.

We went to the classroom for a story before lunch.

After lunch Christopher and I came home and she continued on with her day. I was planning on staying all day but he was getting cranky.

Finally my little girl comes home. Funny, the paper says bus drop off was 3:27 and by god, she was dropped off at exactly 3:27! Somehow I don't see that happening every week!

A week to go..

>> Tuesday, September 1, 2009

Next week tomorrow, my daughter will be a kindergartener. I don't think I'm ready for this but at the same time, I really could use that 8 hour break in the day from the constant chatter! Christopher is pretty quiet so we will have some quiet times during the day.

The first day of school parents are encouraged to come and spend the day. They have lots of activities planned so Christopher and I will go and see what everything is all about. Meet her teacher, see her classroom and have a good time.

My baby isn't a baby anymore, she is a kindergartener!
